Brighten Up, Lighten Up: Home Lamps go a Long Way in Stretching your Decorating Dollar

Posted on 18 July 2009

Home LampsHome Lamps:  One of the easiest, most affordable ways to spruce up a room is to update your accessories. The simple act of changing a throw, accent pillows, and home lamps can have dramatic results. To effectively change the look and feel of interiors, be sure to evaluate all home lamps.  Are there rooms that are severely under-lit? Does your lighting for the home look outdated compared to the rest of your furniture and accessories? Do your lamps reflect your overall design sense?

Be sure to consider what kind of look you’re going for. What does the room call for? What is it primarily used for? What do you want to achieve with your lighting? Do you want a harmonious, streamlined effect or a playful, creative look? For example, when selecting bedside table lamps, you may opt for something soft and rounded, something soothing. You’ll likely opt for a soft white  bulb with a three-way option. Carefully selecting the right light for the space affects the mood. While the use of LED bulbs is becoming more popular, most people opt for the softer “old fashioned” incandescent or new compact fluorescent bulbs when lighting certain spaces due to the quality of light they afford.

Consider that adding a new home lamp or two costs merely a fraction of what a new sofa or rug cost. And just because it’s affordable doesn’t mean it looks cheap. For example, you can embellish and enliven a dining room with a buffet table lamp or two. Consider flanking both ends of the buffet table with matching lamps that illuminate not only the room but your beloved china set, family photos, and keepsakes. They also help to create “life” in what is often and under-utilized room in the modern home.

Home lamps can bring much-needed pops of color without a big price tag. This is a great method for updating a space, particularly as the seasons change. Summertime calls for cool colors; pale greens, and blues, and whites. Spring renews passion with soft, pastel pinks and butter yellows. Fall warms a space with pumpkin orange and noble purples. Winter is cheered up with the use of bright, primary colors, especially forest green and cherry red. If you prefer a more minimalist look you can make simple updates through the use of pattern, shade styles and different base materials including various metals, woods, ceramics, and glass.

No matter what your design aesthetic, you can quickly and easily change a space by regularly rotating your home lamps. While built for functionality, it is a lamp’s design that helps you feel like a million bucks in your space, and often for less than a night on the town.

Adding a lamp or two to a large living room which is what I have is a great idea. I have red carpets with off yellow walls. I think having a couple of buffett table lamps situated in the corners of the room will make the difference especially this Winter where it tends to get dark in the room. Thanks for the tips.

Updating your accessories seems to be the easiest way in home decorating but what happens when you need a home remodel? Do new accessories mask this necessity? I wish they were, for one thing they are cheaper.

I very much agree with you. Lamps can really go a long way if you put it in a right place. It can brighten up even a very dull receiving area, bedrooms or even the kitchen! You also have to consider the furniture that you have at home. We don’t want our place to look strange!

  • i agree with you on this, with proper use of lamps the look of interior can be enhanced. i have seen some very simple homes, i mean they dont have heavy and fancy furniture, but the feel inside was so soothing coz they had used good lamps and lampshades in the rooms

I just bought some silver lamps that really set off the living room. Adding something simple and affordable can make your room look more inviting to visitors.

It pays to ‘think ahead’ about lamps. When we had our house built, I really should have included a floor electrical outlet where our two recliner were going to go. Having a nice reading lamp would be perfect for that spot except now I have to run a cord to the middle of the room. Not an ideal situation at all.

    Think ahead!

When it comes to decorating some people think they haven’t to spend a lot to make a huge difference. So I agree with updating your accessories. It tends to be the little things that catch people’s eye upon entering a room. You don’t need a complete makeover in any part of your home to make an effective change.

  • Using lamps is much cheaper than wiring overhead lighting. There are so many different styles of lamps on the market that can make a huge improvement to a space.
